Founder's Message

Ps Alan Tan Founder

Striving for a better and wholesome education.
Throughout the history of public schooling, widely scattered groups of critics have pointed out that the education of children involved much more than simply moulding them into work force. The new workforce needs employees who are innovative and resourceful. Every person’s intelligence and abilities are far more complex than scores on standardized tests. Schools are not just a place to collect A’s, we need to instill learning skills, life skills and leadership skills in students.
Pioneers like Francis Parker and John Dewey (progressive education) and Maria Montessori and Rudolf Steiner, among others, insisted that education should be understood as the art of cultivating the moral, emotional, physical, psychological and spiritual dimensions of the developing child. Dr Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan once said, “Education, to be complete, must be humane, it must include not only the training of the intellect but the refinement of the heart and the discipline of the spirit.”

Holistic and wholesome education is based on the premise that each student finds identity, meaning and purpose in life through connections to the community, to the natural world and to spiritual values such as compassion and peace. There are two lasting bequests we can give our children: one is roots, the other is wings. The wings to explore the world for themselves. Children have to be educated but they have also to be left to educate themselves -Ernest Dimnet.

Holistic education aims to call forth from people an intrinsic reverence for life and a passionate love of learning. Wholesome education involves the whole self and therefore includes the following parts of the education mainly happens in the mental arena, passing exams, gaining qualifications and degrees, actions that demonstrate intellect or intellectual knowledge. The mind leads the process and is at the top of the hierarchy of learning.
The Greek philosopher Aristotle came up with three stages in the area of communication: Ethos, Pathos and Logos

Ethos is credibility(character) of the person
Pathos is an appeal to emotion
Logos is an appeal to logic or reason

In academia, logos and ethos (reasoning and authority) tend to be given more weight than pathos(emotion). Education based primarily on pathos will not be taken seriously. By the same token, if you only preset old and hard facts, you will quickly lose your student’s attention. And if your arguments are overly emotional rather than factual, you could lose your credibility. In Harvest International School Klang, I hope the education we offer is used to inform, educate and engage the students.

Wholesome education embraces the moral, emotional, physical, psychological and spiritual dimensions of the developing child. Through the various activities, programs and extracurricular activities, we hope Harvest International School Klang can develop each child differently.

Education is not just literacy; it is the development of character.
